Giants struggle in loss to Padres; slow to start season

The San Francisco Giants dropped the series finale to the San Diego Padres 7-1 Wednesday, with a pair of costly misplays at first base derailing what could have been a series sweep.

Utility infielder Casey Schmitt, filling in at first while Rafael Devers (hamstring) handles DH duties, committed two errors that led directly to Padres runs. Third baseman Matt Chapman was caught on camera directing some choice words at Schmitt during a mound visit — but both players brushed it off postgame as competitive heat-of-the-moment frustration.

The loss overshadowed an otherwise encouraging series win over a tough division opponent. Reliever José Buttó also exited with right arm tightness after a rough outing, and his IL status is TBD. On a brighter note, catcher Daniel Susac made his MLB debut in the eighth inning.

Are the Giants Struggling?

Yeah, a bit. They’re 2-4 to start the season, sitting dead last in the NL West. It was a rough beginning — they opened with a 0-3 series sweep at the hands of the Yankees, including back-to-back shutouts that marked the first time in franchise history they were shut out in consecutive games to open a season. They rebounded to take the San Diego series 2-1 before losing this finale.
