Pirates Phenom Konnor Griffin will make MLB debut Friday vs. Orioles

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced Thursday they are promoting shortstop Konnor Griffin, the top-ranked prospect in baseball. Connor will make his MLB debut in Friday’s home opener against the Baltimore Orioles at PNC Park in Pittsburgh.

The 19-year-old, selected ninth overall in the 2024 draft, was reassigned to Triple-A Indianapolis late in spring training after posting a 28% strikeout rate and a .171 average during the exhibition slate. He responded by hitting .438 with five walks against four strikeouts in five games with Indianapolis.

The callup addresses a need — Pittsburgh shortstops have combined for a .546 OPS through the season’s first six games, 17th in the majors.
